DeafBlind Telecommunication Apps

Revolutionizing DeafBlind Telecommunication with myMMX db

myMMX db is an easy-to-use app that was specially developed to enable individuals who are DeafBlind or low vision to make telephone calls using a Telecom Relay Service (TRS). The app is revolutionizing the DeafBlind communication tool market. At nWise, we wanted to develop a software for Braille users. And myMMX db is the only app currently available that allows individuals to read Real-Time Text (RTT) at their own pace, on their Braille reader.

Availability and Usability

Our aim was to develop a reliable, widely-available app for the DeafBlind. We worked in close collaboration with the DeafBlind community to develop and test the app to ensure that DB individuals are given the best opportunities to make regular calls, but in particular to call emergency services. The result is the best application on the market for DeafBlind communication.

The myMMX db app allows people who are DeafBlind and low vision to both make and receive calls in three different ways:

  • Voice calls via a Telecom Relay Service (TRS)
  • Point-to-point calls with other apps using the text standard, Real-time Text (RTT)
  • Direct calls to Emergency Services that can receive RTT calls.

The myMMX db app is available for Windows PCs and iOS

Optimal Software for DeafBlind Communication

We also wanted to make sure the following essential elements for people with both vision and hearing impairments were incorporated in the app:

  • Contrasting colors: change background colors, and adjust text font, size and color.
  • Text speed: lets individuals to read Real-Time Text (RTT) at their own pace.
  • Ability to pause text.
  • Adapting the text so that it is suitable both for users of a QWERTY keyboard and users of a Braille display.
  • Suitable for use with magnification and screen reading software.
